Male Waxing FAQ

  • Why should I wax?  Waxed hair grows back smooth and fine, unlike the stubble that shaving causes. Each time you wax, the hair follicle weakens and can eventually die, leaving you with less hair. Waxing also lasts significantly longer than other forms of hair removal methods.
  • Does waxing hurt?  Well, you are removing hair from the follicle so yes, it is going to hurt. However, it does get easier each time. The hair usually grows slower after the first waxing. We strive to get the wax done as quickly as possible; most all Female Brazilians are done in less than 15 minutes.
  • How long does my hair have to be, really?  We require that you have at least a 3-week hair growth. Honestly, the longer the better for your first wax. It is VERY important to have enough hair growth when you come for your appointment. This allows the wax to grab the hairs easily. If your hair is too short, we will ask you to schedule another appointment, which means you are charged for that day's appointment as well, So please for all of us make sure you haven't shaved, waxed or tweezed for 3 weeks.
  • How long will it last?  Usually, you will need to be waxed every 3-6 weeks. The area being waxed will not necessarily be completely smooth the first few times.
  • Will I be perfectly smooth after my first wax?  It's possible but not probable. Some clients are smooth as a baby's bottom after their first experience. However, it is common that after the first 2 or 3 waxings you may feel a wee bit of stubble. NO shaving, tweezing or waxing between visits. This will cause the hair to growth to be in different cycles, we want to wax when all the hair is on the same cycle.
  • Are there reactions?   Yes, sometimes the face, bikini, back, and chest are all areas that may have a histamine reaction. You can take Benadryl to help before your wax.
  • What do I wear to my waxing appointment?  You will be most comfortable if you wear loose-fitting clothing and nothing too tight on the area that you are being waxed. For any Bikini waxes, I suggest wearing loose-fitting pants or shorts, nothing tight and no underwear when you leave. We need this area to breathe. For back or chest waxes, it would be a good idea to wear a loose t-shirt. Sometimes you will have little blood drops. This is nothing to be concerned about. The hair was simply attached to its food source which is blood.
  • Do I need to get naked?  No, not completely. However, we will need you to undress from the waist down, including your underwear if having a Brazilian wax or a Bikini Full. I know it's a little unnerving for you, but trust me; we do these ALL day long. To us, it's all just skin and hair. So, please don't feel embarrassed. We will do our best to put you completely at ease! Please shower before your appointment. We won’t spell it out…  you catch our drift.
  • What should I avoid after a waxing service? We recommend waiting 24 hours for “extracurricular” activities or activities that cause you to get extremely hot and or sweaty. No Working out, pools, hot tubs, or soaking in any water. Also, for 48 hours no sun or tanning beds. If you can't wait 24 hours for "extracurricular" activities I do recommend buying the Ouch Balm to protect the freshly waxed skin.
  • What kind of wax do you use? We use the absolute highest quality wax available. At Bare Bettie's we use both hard and soft wax. All of our waxes are low temperature, and gentle on the skin.
  • What about the Male Brazilian, the Manzilian? Hair will be removed from the front to the back and everything in between. Some men prefer to take everything in the male bikini area and others will leave some at the top, this is really just personal preference. If you would like all the area of the glutes, we will happily wax that for an additional charge.
  • What is a Bikini Line VS Bikini Full? The Bikini Line is everything that would be outside of a normal pair of panties, to the crease of the leg and extending about  1.5-2 inches from the crease of the leg. The Bikini Full is much like the Brazilian, removes as much or as little from the front side only of the bikini area. Adding in the crack makes it a Brazilian wax. If your unsure of what kind of Bikini wax you want just book a bikini full and we will explain the differences.
  • I’m really paranoid about getting a…um…you know…stiffy during my wax. What happens if I do? We’re all grown-ups and professionals at Bare Bettie's (and we expect our clients to act like adults as well). We know erections can happen due to nerves. Don’t sweat it! Truthfully, we’re not going to acknowledge it anyway.
  • What can I do about bikini bumps/ingrown hair? Some people get ingrown hairs no matter what type of hair removal they choose, please use the recommended products every day. There is no prevention for ingrown hairs. We can also do an ingrown treatment at an additional charge during the wax.
  • Can I tan before or after I get waxed? No, It is best to wait 48 hours before or after waxing to tan, we don't want to cause any pigmentation issues to the new skin.
  • Do I need an appointment? Yes, appointments are REQUIRED! We cannot accept walk-ins! Please be early or on time to avoid losing your appointment. If you need to reschedule your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours in advance. If you cancel with less than 24-hour notice, you will be expected to pay 50% of your service as a no show fee. After 1 no show you will be required to prepay for your service.
  • I'm nervous! Can my partner/spouse/friend come into the appointment with me? Our policy at Bare Bettie's Wax Studio is to allow one person in the treatment room at a time, meaning only the person getting waxed in the room unless it is a parent while minor is getting waxed.  We have found that this allows us to give the absolute best and most professional service available.
  • Medications? If you are on or have been on Accutane in the last year then you should not be waxed! You need to wait 1 year before waxing. The skin is generally very sensitive during and after Accutane. If you use Retin-A, Glycolic, Salicylic, other acid treatments and certain medications you may not be able to be waxed for up to 2 weeks after you have stopped using them.
